In December, New York’s School District No. 1 announced it would change its name to the New York School of Education (NYSSE).
The name change was controversial, with some calling it “a racist slur.”
But the new name is far from the only thing the district is changing.
The school district also plans to rename a new school building after a Native American woman who served on the US Congress and whose family is descendants of former slaves.
But a number of other school districts, including the Bronx School District and the Brooklyn School District, have already made similar changes to their names.
In addition, the new school buildings will have a new name that will not include the word “nigga.”
As of Monday, these names are: New York Public Schools (NYPS)
