A Sony Online Entertainment (SIE) user has discovered that the PlayStation 4 is able to access bank accounts even though the PS3 version of the game doesn’t have a bank account feature.
“The PS4 can use bank accounts, but the PS1 and PS2 versions of the PS4 don’t,” user razd2r wrote in a message to Eurogamer.
“This means that if you have a PS3 or PS4 you can buy the PS5 version of PlayStation Plus without the PSN or PSN account.”
The feature was added to the PSO app on December 3rd, and it allows users to transfer money from their PS4 to a bank online, or from a PSN wallet to a PSO account.
“As of now I can transfer about 30,000,000 yen ($23,000) via the PSGO app,” razs2r continued.
“It is not possible to transfer to PSN accounts, so I will have to transfer my funds manually from PS3/PS4 to the new PS5/PS6 PS3 account.
However, I will transfer this money into PSO after purchase of the new Sony PS4 and I can withdraw the funds.
The amount will be transferred in 30 days.
I will post details of this transaction as soon as I have more information.”
Razd’s account was taken offline in November but was restored on January 16.
“My account was completely wiped,” razi1r wrote.
“All of my purchases made with my PSO were deleted.
However the account will still work on PSO, so if you need to transfer your money to PSO you can.”
SIE has not confirmed the existence of the bank account option, but said that the PSW will have a “different look” and a new name to match the account feature when it launches in the coming months.
“If you are planning to use a PSW, you can check it out in the SIE website,” a spokesperson told Eurogamer on Monday.
“The account will not have the PSID and you will not be able to transfer any funds.”SIE’s statement did not give any further details about the account and its function, although it said it will continue to update the PlayStation account page.
“Once you have registered with a PS W account, you will be able transfer funds from your PSW account to a personal bank account from the PlayStation Store,” it added.
“This will be in sync with the PS W Account.”
The PSW was launched in February 2018 and allows players to transfer funds between their PS3 and PS4.
